Herosphere v1.2 Public Beta now available
To speed up the Beta testing process, we have decided to make version 1.2 Beta available to the open public. It can be downloaded now from the Herosphere page in the Free Stuff section.
You will still need to own a copy of Herosphere in order to test the new build, but I'm hoping that by making it available to everyone who owns it, I'll have even more people testing my code. And once all of the bugs have been found and terminated, I'll be able to move on to more functionality.
So those of you who own Herosphere and haven't had a chance to look at the 1.2 Beta, now is your chance. All that I ask is that if you do download it, and run it, and test it... if you do find errors PLEASE LET ME KNOW! The whole point is to find the problems so that I can fix them. Make sure to email be at ben@herosphere.com... not my Hero Games address.
To download Herosphere v1.2 Beta, go to http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/.../PublicBeta.htm.
Have fun!

The following is a special notice from Ben Seeman, Lieutenant Programmer of Herosphere. The day has come to let our first people through the curtain to unveil Herosphere v.1.2 -- Beta, that is.
Herosphere
v1.2 Beta Test
After months of coding, weeks of debugging,
a few sleepless nights and a few scares, the
latest version of Herosphere is now ready to be tested!
I am currently accepting applications for those people who
are interested in testing the new version before it is released.Qualifications:

1 – A Herosphere CD key.
If you have already purchased Herosphere, then you're all
set. If you have not purchased Herosphere and want to test
the new version, you MUST purchase Herosphere to do so.
2 – Hero Designer. Because
version 1.2 uses Hero Designer for character creation, testers
will need to have access to the character creation software.
3 – Excellent observation and
communication skills. Testers need to be able to identify
problems and communicate them CLEARLY to the head of Quality
Assurance.
4 – A real desire to help.
Applicants should interested in testing for the purpose of
improving the product instead of just wanting to play with
a new toy. Those interested should email me atbenseeman@earthlink.net
with the following information:
- Full Name
- Address
- Phone Number

with me regarding Herosphere playtesting.
Once I receive your email I will get in contact with you.
Once all Beta Test members have been selected we will be able
to move forward with the actual testing cycle. I'm really

Greetings Hero
Fans!
I gotta tell ya, it's a good day for HERO!
You remember that Lieutenant Programmer who took over Herosphere, right? You should! Because Ben Seeman had hit the ground running. He has accomplished an extraordinary amount of work since he started a few months ago.
First off, he has actually become very familiar with the Herosphere architecture. As you can imagine, it has dozens of modules, hundreds of assets, and several thousand lines of code. In itself, this is the largest accomplishment for someone who has never approached such a massive project.
Second, he has been able to implement a complete import routine for Hero Designer files. This is also a huge undertaking as it requires him to master both data structures and translate them effectively and efficiently. In short, Herosphere can pick up its entire characteristic, martial, and power sets directly from Hero Designer files in our current beta.
Had enough to digest yet? There's more... but to find out what we have added, you'll have to read the Developer's Journal in our new section, Updates. You'll be able to get there any time from the extra area in the menu bar on the left. Bookmark the section and visit it often. Ben will be letting you know how progress is going and what we will be doing next.
Sincerely,
Dave Feldman

Greetings Hero Fans!
Yes, we have been away for some time rebuilding
DexCard, but I'm happy to say the company is back on track again.
We have some exciting news for Herosphere and it's future -- but first,
a little history...
When we began Herosphere at the beginning of last year, the software for
character creation in HERO was outdated and didn't conform to the newly
released 5th edition rules. Thus, we had to spend over
half of our development time on the Character Module within HS
just to get characters to play with. There's a lot of organization and
special considerations with the Graphic User Interface and layout requirements
for the characters and their stats, abilities, martial maneuvers and powers.
It wasn't until after our first release that Hero Designer neared its
very first alpha phase. Sure enough, we tacked
an HD importer on our priority list so we could share characters between
us. Near the end of last year was when we had to began rebuilding our
corporate contracts, so we never had the opportunity to tap into the awesome
power of HD.
Now all of that is changing. Well over 90
percent of our current owners (according to our last poll in December)
either owned Hero Designer or were about to purchase it. With that, we
made an executive decision to move forward with all the new character
creation elements in the game engine to utilize
Hero Designer characters. Ultimately, the Character Module in Herosphere
will become obsolete by version 2.0 -- but with the enormous time and
energy it will free up for development on the game engine, we will be
able to pick up a lot more progress on our limited budget of time and
money, and take Herosphere to new levels much, much faster.
But wait, there's more! I, Dave Feldman,
have been busy programming for the new Lord of the Rings collectable card
game online and have had very little time to spare. And while I'm very
protective of the Herosphere project and its architecture, I have considered
bringing in someone new to manage its further updates and progress. I
happy to say that day has arrived.
Of course, the perfect candidate would have prior experience in Director,
know Herosphere intimately, and even have a close relationship with Hero
Games. Needless to say, we are thrilled such a candidate exists and look
forward to working with him.
So with that, we introduce our new Lieutenant Programmer,
Ben Seeman:
Thanks
Dave!
For me, Herosphere is the perfect combination of two of my favorite things:
Hero System combat and 3D programming. I’ve spent many nights dreaming
of creating programs exactly like Herosphere, so to have the opportunity
to actually work on Herosphere is basically a dream come true. Suffice
it to say I am very, very excited about this project.
Like other members of the Hero community, I was upset when Herosphere
development was put on hold. For the longest time I wondered if there
was anything that I could do to help move the development along since
I had done QA for version 1, I was intimately familiar with the Hero System
and Herosphere is coded in Director 8.5, my coding language of choice.
I finally asked Dave about helping, and after a few discussions, here
I am.
The development that I do for Herosphere will be independent from my employment
with Hero Games. I will not be working on Herosphere during regular business
hours. That means that I will not be able to put in 40-hour weeks working
on code (although that could be fun, right Dave?). I’ll be working
on it in my spare time.
So, for the next few weeks I’ll be getting my hands dirty with Herosphere
code and I hope to be able to make a decent contribution to the project.
And on a final note, please understand that Ben is just now taking on
the Herosphere architecture and will have much to learn before he can
produce significant results. We are hopeful that we can accomplish a lot
with his help, but we remain cautious about our expectations and hope
our fans will as well.
Thus begins a new chapter in Herosphere, wish us luck!
Sincerely,
Dave Feldman

Happy Holidays!
12/25/02
Here at DexCard we
have had quite a year. But in the final months, we have actually had a number
of business transformations. We are currently in the process of buying
a house, we are setting up contracts and jobs
for the coming spring, and we have been working on our new
website design. So if you haven't seen as much of us lately, you'll
know why. :)
From our staff to you, Happy Holidays!
Get
Out the Vote
11/05/02
It's time to vote for the upcoming 1.2!
1.2,
you ask? Yes, 1.1 is currently in development and
will be in alpha testing soon. It essentially adds more powers and
a few other features.
But 1.2 will be a direction determined by the fans. In time we do hope to
have _everything_, of course. But for now, you get to prioritize what is
tackled first for your free updates.
What do you need to vote? Your serial number! Be sure to have it ready this
week as it will be used in the process. (Yes, we'll
allow some last minute sales from this week to jump in as well. But you'll
have to purchase Herosphere by November 9th for your vote to count.)
Your serial number should be posted with the receipt you received when getting
your HS in the mail.
We've posted the ballet in the Vote Section of this
site.
We're
Reconstructing...
9/30/02
We've just completed
our e-commerce setup and it's open for business!
I won't lie, it has been a pain to get it up and running, but the task is finally behind us. We still have a little further to go once we have set up an account with a download site (Like download.com) for our demo. And soon we'll be posting the Owner's Vote for the next update.
Check back with us again soon for the latest news and updates on Herosphere. :)
DexCard
Recycles
9/27/02
Over the last few weeks
DexCard has been recycling it's business accounts. For those in the know,
our company doesn't survive strictly on Herosphere revenue just yet, but we
wouldn't mind if that changes in the near future. :)
Until then, we have to make due with our usual corporate contracts and we
are knee deep in one right now. As such, we haven't been able to get our new
site design together with the e-commerce just yet, but we think this will
change during the weekend. If not, those whose orders are still pending will
be handled on Monday manually.
We hope to have the "Owner's Vote" in the near future as well, but
can't give any specifics just yet.
The Demo of Herosphere is the next highest priority after the new site and
we hope to have it available on Download.com very soon.
For now, keep your fingers crossed for our new account. If it pays us well
in the coming months, we won't have to beat the e-streets for new contracts
in between and can put a lot more focus on HS instead. Ahhhh, to be a small
business... :)
Mac
Attack!
Okay, we are ready to take those Mac orders for Herosphere. Here's how it works:
1) Send your full name, phone number, and address to purchase@herosphere.com with the subject line: "Mac Purchase Order"
2) We will build your Mac version for you before contacting you on the sale.
3) Once we have reached you and confirmed the sale, we will send the three megabyte file (3 Meg) to your email address. This version is yours and yours alone.
We anticipate the current batch of Mac versions will take us into early next week to build if you send in your purchase order now.
The updates for the Mac version to 1.4 are also free and use the exact same files as the Windows version. Also, we will release the OS X version of Herosphere free of charge to Mac owners once it is available.
The Big Vote!
Remember, if you are an owner of Herosphere, you will need your Confirmation/Registration code to vote in our upcoming "Update Poll". Here we will have the current owners vote on what they would like to see from a list of choices on our "Hot List". Of course, those features that we have already started on include additional Powers and new interface design for Advantages and Limitations.
Whether you own Herosphere or not, feel free to look at our web manual or download the PDF version.
Sincerely,
The Herosphere Team
